An elemental strategy.
  • Jul 1, 2016
  • Journal of the Medical Library Association : JMLA
  • Nancy K Roderer

As medical libraries evolve and grow in the digital era, much has been much written about different aspects of the changes that have occurred. Less literature traces interrelated developments in a specific library over an extended period of time. To address this lack, the management team of the Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University wrote a chapter [1] for the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) book, Difficult Decisions: Closing and Merging Academic Libraries [2], which described the evolution of the Welch library between 2000 and 2013, a period in which a long-range strategic plan was developed and implemented. The ACRL book chapter reviews the status of library services, collections, and facilities as of 2013; discusses staffing and financial issues; and describes the library plan as of 2013, as this excerpt shows: On the surface, the saga of the Welch Medical Library is about a library building and a collection of books within it, but there is also a story about the dramatic evolution of library services and expectations in the context of changing technology. While these threads are tightly interwoven, and both are important, it seems likely that it is the latter that will have the most lasting impact on users of the library and the work that they do. Our story begins with the opening of the Welch library building in 1929. The library was to function as a central library for the medical campus of Johns Hopkins, and the building also accommodated the Institute of the History of Medicine (IHOM) and its collection. As the campus grew, so did the library's staff, collection, services, and locations, but the building continued to serve its central function reasonably well for over 50 years. Of particular importance to the Hopkins community was the grand reading room, which houses the Sergeant painting of the Four Doctors which commemorates the founding of the Johns Hopkins hospital and medical school in 1889 and 1893 respectively. The Welch library staff aggressively pursued the application of evolving technology to library services and collections, and, as elsewhere, library materials and services increasingly began to be used from outside the library building. By 2000, both the problems with the existing building and the direction of electronic services seemed to call for a new vision of library services and a relook at the building. Through consultation with library users and with the assistance of an architectural team, it was envisioned that by 2013 library services and collections would be predominantly electronic, provided to users “wherever they are.” The period of 2000–2012 saw rapid increases in electronic collections and evolution of embedded services to library users, both guided by a series of action plans. All physical branches of the central library were closed, and plans were developed to reuse the central library portion of the Welch library building in support of graduate student education. The library staff moved out of the Welch building, maintaining a small service desk on site. Progress since 2013 is slow but remains true to the concept of serving the users wherever they are. A renovation of the Welch library building, focusing on the main reading rooms and building infrastructure issues, was completed in early 2014. Since then, the building has drawn increased use and seen many events hosted in the grand reading rooms. The services provided to users wherever they are continue to grow. The informationists and other staff are more deeply engaged than ever with faculty, researchers, clinicians, and students, and library services are more integrated into the work of users. These activities have been and will be documented in additional publications and presentations.

User Satisfaction on library resources and services: survey conducted in main library of the Open University of Sri Lanka
  • Sep 15, 2020
  • Journal of the University Librarians Association of Sri Lanka
  • K M R K Amarasekara + 1 more

One of the most important measures used for evaluating the service quality of a library is a user satisfaction survey. The objectives of the study were to find out the purposes of using a library and to evaluate user satisfaction towards the library facilities, library staff, library services, library resources and library website of the Open University of Sri Lanka. The population of the study was the university staff and the students who registered in the library of the Colombo regional centre of the Open University of Sri Lanka. Total sample size was 357 inclusive of both university staff members and students. Purposive sampling technique was utilized to get a representative sample. Primary data were collected with the help of a survey using a structured questionnaire, designed specifically for the purpose. Analysis of primary data was done using frequency tables and basic descriptive statistics such as mean, median etc. To measure the validity and reliability of the statements that are used to measure the user satisfaction, Cronbach Alpha testing was used. User satisfaction was evaluated under 05 parameters, such as (a) Library facilities; (b) Library staff; (c) Library services; (d) Library resources and (e) Library Website and Information access. It was identified that the respondents used the library for different purposes. Study results indicated reading, searching library resources, using computers to access information, and borrowing and returning books as the major purposes of using the library. The results of the study also revealed that on average, the respondents were relatively most satisfied with the library staff and their performance and helpfulness, moderately satisfied with the available library services, satisfied with the library website and its facilities and generally satisfied with the library facilities and library resources as a whole. The results also indicated that overall library users are satisfied with the available library resources, services and facilities. But, the study could also identify that there were some areas that users were not much satisfied with, particularly, providing user awareness programs, training on information searching, dissemination of services or providing information through social network media like face book, twitter etc., improving Wi-Fi facilities, improving access to audio visual materials, increasing the availability of electronic databases and providing more online library services. Therefore it is important to conduct information literacy programmes and user awareness progammes in order to make library users aware about new library resources and services and to enhance their information literacy skills. Further, it is recommended that understanding the user information needs, fulfilling those needs and measuring their level of satisfaction on regular basis is essential in order to provide a better service and to establish the sustainability of libraries.

Digitizing local archives and culture through literacy using an e-library website is a reflection as well as an effort to save phenomenal memories which are unique and hardly repeated. An archive is a crucial component of social life and literacy, and it must be conserved because of its historical significance. Archives need to be preserved because the nation’s cultural treasures due to the fact beyond activities documented via data are legal evidence. Technology and information advancements are one of the options that can be used by the public to store online documentation and archiving. Literature can reflect the historical history of a country and are also a cultural driver in the cultural development of society. The type of research used in this study is library research. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, documentation studies, and interviews at the five research locations, namely the North Sumatra Provincial Library and Archives Service, Tebing Tinggi City Library and Archives Service, Pematangsiantar Library and Archives Service, Regency of Central Tapanuli Library and Archives Service, Sibolga City Library and Archives Service and North Tapanuli Library and Archives Service. The result of this research is that the best library service was shown by the library in Tebing Tinggi, but the Regency of Central Tapanuli Library and Archives Service area has an unprecedented and excellent collection of books and they have got an e-library from Kubuku as a digital library for society.

Citizen services and public libraries: an analysis of a new service in Danish public libraries
  • Jul 20, 2010
  • New Library World
  • Niels Ole Pors

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse the introduction of citizen services in the public libraries in Denmark. The paper focuses on how library staff has perceived the introduction and how the library visitors look at it. The paper further elicits information about differences between library visitors using this service and visitors not using it.Design/methodology/approachThe paper examines the introduction of citizen services in two local libraries. It focuses on staff reactions and perceptions and it also analyses the use and perception of the service in relation to the traditional services. The paper is based on interviews with the involved library staff, citizen service users and administrative staff. The paper is also founded on a survey among library visitors in the two libraries. The survey was conducted as an on‐line and a paper‐based survey.FindingsThe major findings of the paper are that the library staff as a whole welcome the new work tasks because they feel that it is of value for the local community. The findings also indicate that a feared conflict between service tasks and authority tasks did not pose a problem in reality. The library visitors as a whole also welcomed the citizen service in the local libraries and perceived it as a kind of service improvement. Nearly, 25 per cent of the users have used this service in the library and they appreciated it very much. However, the service does not rank high in the visitors' perception of significance of library services. It indicates that the library visitors appreciate new services that are convenient but also that it does not matter that much. The paper also indicates that it is frequent library visitors who use citizen services in library most. There is no indication of the new library users as an effect of the introduction of citizen services in the library.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation is, of course, that the paper is based on a study of only two local branches and it would be scientifically problematic to generalise the results – at least in a statistical sense.Originality/valueThe paper is based on a traditional evaluation study. It is one of the comprehensive assessments of introduction of citizen services in Denmark and some of the findings will be of wider interest for other libraries that intend to take up the cooperative service.

  • I Gede Mahatma Yuda Bakti + 1 more

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between library customer loyalty and other latent constructs, namely service quality and customer satisfaction in a university library service in Indonesia. More specifically, the research aims to examine whether service quality affects customer loyalty directly and indirectly through customer satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachThe authors surveyed the users of a university library in Indonesia by using a structured questionnaire. In total, 100 of the library users participated on the survey. Structural equation modeling technique was performed to analyze the empirical data.FindingsThe research reveals that service quality has a direct effect on customer satisfaction, which then directly influences library customer loyalty. However, service quality does not have significant direct effect on customer loyalty in a library service.Research limitations/implicationsThe data collection using convenience sampling method causes the limitation of the research results in representing across all library users in the university library where the research was conducted. This study can be replicated with a larger sample size in order to examine the stability of the results in other contexts. In addition, future research can be carried out by involving other variables that may affect customer loyalty, i.e. perceived value, image, trust, and involvement.Practical implicationsThe library customer loyalty is not guaranteed if library management only improves the quality of the library services. Furthermore, to achieve library customer loyalty, library management has to assure the library customer satisfaction. Thus, since many factors can influence library customer satisfaction, library management should improve not only library service quality, but also other aspects that influence library customer satisfaction, such as perceived price, situational factor, and personal factor.Originality/valueOnly a few empirical studies on customer loyalty were found in library service. More specifically, there is a lack of empirical studies that investigated the relationship between library customer loyalty, service quality, and customer satisfaction. This paper has addressed this gap in the literature.

  • Zihadur Rahman + 3 more

Purpose This study investigates user satisfaction with library services and staff behavior at the University Library in Bangladesh, focusing on how staff behavior mediates the relationship between library services, resources and overall user satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach The research adopts a quantitative survey method, collecting data from library users through a structured questionnaire. The survey evaluates user satisfaction with the library’s collections, facilities, environment, services, marketing strategies and staff behavior. Findings The majority of users expressed satisfaction with the library’s physical collections, reference and circulation services, library catalog and staff competence and attitude. Marketing strategies and the overall quality of library services received positive ratings, with users giving an average satisfaction score of 7 out of 10. However, users raised concerns regarding the library’s seating capacity, internet access and printing and photocopying services. The findings also indicate that staff behavior and skills significantly mediate user satisfaction by influencing perceptions of library resources, environment and services. Practical implications To improve user satisfaction, the study recommends enhancing the library’s academic and research collections, upgrading internet speed with Wi-Fi access, and addressing infrastructure-related issues such as seating and printing facilities. The findings emphasize the need for regular staff training to ensure effective interaction with users and optimal service delivery. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by identifying the mediating role of staff behavior in enhancing user satisfaction in academic libraries. The findings provide practical recommendations for improving library services and ensuring user satisfaction, particularly in resource-constrained environments like the university.

  • P.K.M Kaushamalika + 2 more

The study examines the usage of library and information services provided by selected regional centre libraries of the Open University of Sri Lanka. It attempts to find out the needs, expectations and usage of the library by distant learners and their perceptions about library services. The study sample (n=350) was drawn from a population of 1550 students of three selected regional centre libraries of the Open University of Sri Lanka. The study found that the users are satisfied with the overall library resources, services and facilities available, but users are not really getting the full benefit of the library services and some of the services are under-utilized. The major causes or reasons for this problem are the lack of comprehensiveness of the regional library collections, insufficient space for reading area, inadequate training for users in services and the lack of computers and Internet facilities in the library. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the library should order multiple copies of reading material, extend the lending period for a period of one month in regional centres, increase the number of computers for users and provide online access facilities. It is also recommended that a comprehensive information literacy program should be conducted to promote awareness and use of electronic information resources.

  • Asim Iqbal + 1 more

The purpose of this study was to investigate the gap between library users’ expected and perceived library services and to examine the role of library services in developing user satisfaction and loyalty. A quantitative research design using a questionnaire was used to investigate the research objectives. Undergraduate students were selected as the population from the Information Technology University. The questionnaire was adopted from previous literature. It was pilot tested with 50 undergraduate students and found reliable. Data was collected from 304 respondents and were analyzed using SPSS (v.20) software. The study found that library users expected a high level of service in three categories, i.e., Affect of Service, Information Control, and Library as a Place, as all mean scores were higher than 7 when rated against a scale from 1 to 9. The participants reported that they were likely to consult the library and recommend it to others. The structural equation model confirmed that better services will increase users’ satisfaction with the library resources and services and will lead to winning users’ loyalty. The findings from the study provided useful insight into the determinants of user satisfaction and loyalty and could be useful for other academic libraries seeking ways to increase user loyalty and user satisfaction with library resources and services.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the professional competence and attitude of library personnel towards digital services in selected university libraries in Nigeria. Despite the evolution of digital technologies in university libraries, as well as massive investment and research on digital libraries particularly in developed countries, it has been observed that many university libraries in Nigeria are still relatively reliant on traditional library services which no longer serve and satisfy the twenty-first-century users’ needs. Design/methodology/approach The population of the study comprised all the 196 library personnel from the 5 purposively selected university libraries in Nigeria. The total enumeration sampling method was adopted; while the questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection. Findings The findings of the study revealed that internet service was the most available digital service in libraries. It further revealed that most of the library personnel have requisite proficiency skills in basic computer operations. However, inadequate power supply was the major problem affecting digital services in the university libraries. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to a specific geographical area and selected university libraries in Ogun State, Nigeria. Accordingly, further studies need to be carried out on the same or similar subject matter, in other states or regions in Nigeria. Practical implications The need for library personnel to acquire relevant information and communication technology skills and develop a positive attitude that will enable them to render effective digital library services in the university libraries. Apart from this, university libraries should also strive to train users on how to access digital services in the libraries. Originality/value This study is novel, in the sense that it is the first of its kind to examine the professional competence and attitude of library personnel towards digital services in university libraries in Nigeria. The paper reported the necessary skills that library staffs need to demonstrate to effectively use various digital resources in the libraries to meet the information needs of their users.

The Term “Library Service” in the Conceptual Framework of Library Science
  • Sep 10, 2021
  • Bibliotekovedenie [Russian Journal of Library Science]
  • Yuri N Stolyarov

The article considers the contradiction in concepts connected with key content of the library activity. Some fundamental documents use the term “library service”, others use “information and library service”, “library and information service” terms. The different content is also given to these concepts. The inconsistency is increased by the fact that since Soviet times the library services have often been understood as library activity in general. There is given the brief review of primarily positions on the conceptual framework of library service: library activity, work with readers, guidance of reading, library service, library and information service, information and library service. In violation of the Federal Law № 78-FZ “On Librarianship”, the term “library and information service” is enshrined in the names of textbooks, GOST R 7.0.103—2018 “Library and information service. Terms and definitions” and GOST R 7.0.104—2019 “Library and information services of scientific library. Types, forms and modes of delivery”. While library science is striving hard to integrate itself into information science, information science itself is far from recognising library and bibliographic science as an integral part of it. “Library service” is considered both as specific and general library science concept. The definition of “work” in relation to library science is given: it is the function of library staff to create values, provide benefits or meet the informational, cultural, educational needs of readers. The author proposes to intensify the concept of “library readers study”, to develop thoroughly its theory and methodology. The paper provides additional arguments in favour of the concept of “library readers study” in addition to the well-known ones. It is argued that in addition to revealing the links between the readers’ contingent and the library staff, it is necessary to reveal the links of the “readers’ contingent” subsystem with other subsystems of the first and second circuits of the library as a system.
