Abstract

Introduction: interprofessional education in healthcare is a very effective approach for both overall student training and to tackle teaching from different specific aspects. A new paradigm promotes a transformation of healthcare philosophy, changing from leaning towards «patient-focussed care» to focussing on «care in association with the patient». The aim of this study was the evaluation of an interprofessional education activity with the integration of the patient with chronic disease, in the Degrees of Nursing, Physiotherapy and Social Work of a Spanish public university.Methos: to address the aim, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was applied. Seventeen students from the Nursing, Physiotherapy and Social Work degrees evaluated a training activity, named «Integration of the Patient's Perspective in Multidisciplinary Care», using a questionnaire. Data were collected on the acquisition of knowledge and skills, and their satisfaction with the activity. In addition, the two patients involved also evaluated the activity through semi-structured interviews and the teachers with a brief questionnaire. Results: in the objective assessment of competencies, the students obtained a mean global score of 7.63 points (SD: 2.33) out of 10. The students assessed their satisfaction with the activity with an overall average score of 4.49 (SD: 0.61) out of 5. Both patients and teachers value the activity very positively. Conclusion: the results presented show how this learning experience has been highly satisfactory for all participants, and how students have managed to acquire the expected skills.
