Abstract
This article aims to study the construction of a familiar Merino character, the professor Eduardo Souto, through the analysis of the first two tales in which he appears, published in El viajero perdido(1990), with special attention to the humour and quijotismthat characterize him. The essay consists of three sections. The first one provides some reflections about the mechanisms of humoristic and fantastic literature and their common elements. The second part is dedicated to the study of «Las palabras del mundo», where humour and quijotismemerge as Souto's peculiar feautures, which are consolidated in «Del libro de Naufragios», analyzed in the last section.
