Abstract

There has been a rise in the frequency of infectious complications from prostate biopsy, leading many investigators to explore alternative strategies for prophylaxis. The present study1 retrospectively compared 535 men who had a transrectal prostate biopsy from 2011 to 2012 with single-dose ciprofloxacin 500 mg plus aminoglycoside vs 654 men undergoing biopsy from 2012 to 2013 with single-dose levofloxacin 750 mg plus aminoglycoside. Although there was no significant difference in the overall infection rate between the 2 regimens (3.18% vs 2.14%; P = .26), there was a significant reduction in severe infections after the switch to levofloxacin (2.43% vs 0.92%; P = .04).
