Abstract

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has undertaken a several-year study of wireless communications challenges facing first responders in emergency and disaster situations. Some of the results of that study specifically related to propagation in and around buildings at frequencies associated with the public-safety bands are reported in a series of three feature articles in the June, August, and October issues of the Magazine. An introduction to these three articles by Dereck Orr and Christopher Holloway appears in this issue.
