Abstract
The paper presents economic and socioeconomic factors that led to the decision to desalt brackish water on the Croatian islands. Capital and operating costs and water rates of the first reverse osmosis desalination plant were analysed after five years of operation. The positive and negative impact of the desalination plant on the environment is discussed, as well as its successful operation and effect on the wide range of use of desalination in Croatia.
