Abstract

This paper summarizes the elements required for analysing `the food question' as a constituent element of broader socioeconomic processes. To do this, the paper establishes the linkages between food-related issues and economic development in low-income countries, more specifically, in Latin America, with special reference to Brazil as a large country example. Based on contributions from `development economics', the research examines the main conditions for achieving economic growth with increasing social equity with special focus on food security, and requirements as regards global and sectoral policies.
