Abstract
LITTLE is known about the growth and development of fouling organisms in polluted areas. At times, large numbers of oysters and cockles have been killed by crude or fuel oil in certain beds along the French and English coasts1. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated2 that oysters are very tolerant of crude oil overlayering the water, emulsified in the water or periodically sprayed on the oysters. This subject has been reviewed quite recently3. The work reported here was carried out to study the attachment and growth of fouling organisms in a very polluted area of Pireus Port.
