Abstract

The structure of an area of fixed dune grassland was found to consist of a small-scale pattern of high and low phases of standing crop dry weight, superimposed on a larger scale of pattern also of high and low areas of standing crop dry weight (Morton 1974). The smaller scale of pattern was investigated more fully and it was found that there was a positive correlation between standing crop dry weight and soil surface elevation. This small-scale pattern of microtopography was found to be a direct consequence of the small-scale pattern of the standing crop. The present paper describes the investigation of possible causal factors of the observed pattern. The factors considered here are the mineral nutrient status of the soil, the mineral nutrient status of the vegetation, and biotic factors which affect the grassland.
