Abstract

Observations of the behavior of earth dams in past earthquakes have highlighted the value of seismic stability evaluations in assessing the overall performance of an earth dam in a seismic area. The near failure of the Lower San Fernando Dam in the February 9, 1971 San Fernando earthquake increased the importance of such evaluations among design engineers.
