Abstract

where </J is the nonconserved order parameter, c the secondary, conserved order parameter and .d is the field conjugate to c. This is a prQJ:otype model of several tricritical systems, including a metamagnet in which </J is the sublattice magnetization, c the magnetization and .d the magnetic field. A similar model for He·He' mixtures has recently been analyzed by Hohenberg and Nelson') in a mean field, Cahn·Hiliiard type theory of spinodal decomposition. Their analysis was mainly concerned with hydrodynamic effects and ignored nonlinear terms. We wish to treat these important nonlinear terms for a model with only relaxational dynamics, whose dynamics are described by the standard nonlinear Langevin equations
