Abstract

Advanced practice providers are relied on to recognize patients’ need for palliative care, which has supported improved quality of life and reduced aggressive treatments near the end of life in patients with solid tumors. Hematological malignancies have similar disease trajectories and symptom burdens as solid tumors, yet palliative care is underutilized in acute myeloid leukemia, which employs aggressive therapies for management. This systematic literature review examines the 3 studies of early palliative care in patients newly diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. There is a strong association between early palliative care and decreased chemotherapy use and decreased intensive care unit admissions at the end of life.
