Abstract

The minute South African mistletoe, Viscum minimum, parasitizes succulent species of Euphorbia. Establishment of the parasite from seed requires the formation of a primary haustorium from which the endophyte enters the host by means of an intrusive organ. The development of the haustorial disk from the clavate, radicular tip parallels that of other Viscaceae. The failure to observe the occurrence of a haustorial gland associated with the initiation of the intrusive organ in V. minimum suggests that the Viscaceae may be unique in this respect within the Santalales.
