Abstract

An approach is presented and discussed for decentralized optimal control of a urban traffic network. The proposed scheme is of feedback (reactive) type, and heavily relies on the application of a distributed scheme for computation and exchange (between the nodes) travel times. The scheme requires the solution at each node, for every decision instant, of an optimal control problem, over a suitable optimization interval. The model used for the statement and the solution of the single node control problem is presented and discussed in detail, as well as the model used to simulate the overall traffic systems. The system model is presented and discussed as regards the single node control problem, as well as the overall network. A case study relevant to the city of Genova is also presented.
