Dynamic linkages between chicken meat production, consumption, income and trade: Evidence from Wavelet coherence and Granger causality in Asia.
The poultry industry has become one of the fastest-growing agricultural sectors in Asia, driven by rising incomes, and shifting food preferences. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between chicken meat production and key determinants, including chicken meat consumption, gross domestic product, and trade openness, over 30 years (1993-2022) across 28 Asian countries. This study's foundation was based on the theories of consumer demand and international trade. Wavelet coherence and Granger causality analysis were utilised to identify the direction of causality of the variables. The Wavelet results reveal that chicken consumption and GDP become most significant with the production in the Asian continent, while Granger results reveal that most Asian countries showed unidirectional causal flows from trade openness to chicken meat production and from chicken meat production to gross domestic product and consumption. Furthermore, this study provides novel insights that inform policy considerations for policymakers, international and domestic organisations, and governments, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.

This paper reports the results of survey on chicken meat production and marketing in selected Asian countries representing developing (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan), rapid developing (Thailand, Philippine, Iran), and developed nations (Japan, Taiwan, Rep. of Korea) in the region. This survey was done during 1994-1995, coordinated with Asian Productivity Organization (APO). Subsequently the meat production and marketing symposium was held in Tokyo which was attended by those foreign experts participated during the survey. The survey covered all the aspects of poultry industry which included chicken, ducks, geese and quails. The survey data obtained from 1970 to 1993 concerning poultry industry was used. The primary objective is to describe poultry consumption and production patterns. The outlook for the poultry industry is promising. In the past 20 years consumption of chicken meat has increased dramatically in these nations. Consumption of chicken meat will continue to increase as estimated income elasticities for chicken meat indicate a latent demand for this meat comparative to other types of meats. In the coming years this increase will continue, although at a slower pace. In the less developed countries in the region, consumption and production will increase quicker than developed countries.However, our previous study on meat consumption patterns indicated that the consumption of meat is influenced by taste and preference as well as the level of income. With the increase in household income level, income elasticities of demand for chicken meat has increased and it is highest in Pakistan (1.639) followed by India (0.881) and Taiwan (0.4780). Chicken are native to the monsoonal rice growing areas of Asia and so they have become a suitable alternative to fish which has been their main traditional source of protein. However, the preference of animal protein has been shifting from fish to chicken meat. Chicken is very efficient and economically the best as far as the feed conversion ratio is concerned. Another factor which affects meat consumption is the cultural and religious factor. Certain religions has restriction on consumption of certain meat types but none for chicken meat. Therefore, chicken meat can be called as Universal Meat.

This study aims to analyze the production and consumption of broiler meat in North Sumatra Province with forecasting analysis using the SPSS program application. The method of determining the area used is purposive area sampling. The data used in this study are secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Food Security, North Sumatra Province. The results showed that in 2006-2015 in North Sumatra Province, broiler chicken meat production experienced a positive trend and for broiler chicken meat consumption also experienced a positive trend. In 2006-2015 in North Sumatra Province, broiler meat consumption was greater than broiler meat production in North Sumatra Province. For the years 2016-2025 in North Sumatra Province, it shows that the results of forecasting analysis of broiler meat production have a negative trend and the results of forecasting analysis of broiler meat consumption experience a negative trend which decreases with not too significant differences between the results of forecasting analysis of chicken meat production and consumption. broilers in North Sumatra Province.

Chicken meat is one of the most popularly consumed meat in Indonesia, particularly in West Java, according to the socio-economic research and chicken meat production in 2013 issued by the Official of Animal Husbandry West Java. The consumption of chicken meat each year reaches 3.6 kg. Cognizant that the population of Moslems is up to 99.67%, each production and consumption of meat has to fulfill the requirements of its halalan tayyiban (considered good and permitted according to the Islamic syaria law). Speaking of which, a number of activities directly concerning on its halal or haram, later called the halal critical point. This point produces variables and factors that affect both the halal and the haram of the chicken meat. The use of resource referred is to simplify the description of the existing variables and factors. The research method is that which explores the chain of chicken meat production supply. The result of this research is the mapping of the halal critical point, and the measurement in the form of scoring to slaughterhouse and market with the help of experts using AHP. Thus, it could be concluded that the most critical points lurk within the semi-modern slaughterhouse activities, while traditional slaughterhouse has fewer critical points. In the scoring results, the fulfillment of the scores is gained more in semi-modern slaughterhouses as well as modern markets than in that of traditional. This study investigated the microbiological quality of raw chicken meats retailed in Çanakkale province, Türkiye, focusing on the presence of Salmonella spp., their virulence properties, and antibiotic susceptibility profiles. A total of 90 chicken meat samples (30 breast, 30 wing, 30 thigh) were collected between November 2022 and April 2023. While general hygiene indicator microorganisms (Total Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria, Total Aerobic Psychrophilic Bacteria, yeast-mold, total coliform, fecal coliform, and fecal enterococci) were within acceptable limits, their high counts indicated sanitation issues during production stages. Ten Salmonella spp. isolates were identified, with 80% being S. arizonae serotype. These isolates demonstrated significant virulence, exhibiting high DNase (90%) and protease (90%) activities, strong biofilm-forming capacities (40% excellent, 30% very good, 30% good), and notable antibiotic resistance profiles. All isolates showed a Multi-Drug Resistance index greater than 0.2, suggesting intensive antibiotic use in poultry production. These findings highlight significant public health risks associated with chicken meat production and consumption processes, particularly concerning the spread of virulent and antibiotic-resistant Salmonella strains.

Chicken meat is one of Australia's most popular and affordable foods, but it was not ever thus. The Changing Chicken provides a unique view of food systems and culture through an examination of our changing attitudes to chicken meat. Colourful descriptions are provided of the activities conducted in hatcheries, on chicken farms, in processing plants, in supermarket delicatessens and in household kitchens. Power, in its many forms, provides the unifying thread, and the concepts of authority and the cultural economy are used to explain how food systems are evolving. The humble table chicken challenges dominant assumptions about how foods become esteemed, or are judged good to eat. By building on insights from the sociology of consumption, retail geography and political economy, the author builds a new framework for studying the shifting balance of power in food systems. The analysis is intentionally multi-disciplinary and, by comparing the Australian situation with international trends in chicken meat production and consumption, the book sheds light on the complex issue of global food systems and national culinary cultures.

The data about changes in neutrophils stimulation index in men blood after consumption of broiler chicken meat with the natural origin immunomodulators, introduced in feed before slaughter, is presented in this paper. Spleen extract biologically active substances were used as immunomodulators and anti-stressors during pre-slaughter period. Biologically active substances influence on putrescin, spermine and spermidine content in broiler chicken blood before slaughter and on some non-specific resistance indices in people was determined after consumption of broiler chicken meat. Two groups of broiler chickens at one month age were formed for the study. The spleen extract obtained with ultrasound application (I research group) served as biologically active substances was added to the feed of broiler chickens in pre-slaughter period (five days before slaughter). Blood polyamines such as putrescin, spermine and spermidine were determined by the method of High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on the liquid chromatograph Agilent 1200 (USA). The second experiment was conducted on 10 people. We recruited 10 healthy male medical students (20 years old, on average) after the National Medical license examination. Spleen extract polyamines as immunomodulators and anti-stressors have the most effective influence on total quantity of polyamines in broiler chicken blood. As a result of research, it is found that aerosol introduction of spleen extract into broiler chicken feed reliably increases total quantity of polyamines by 39% and, in particular, spermidine concentration by 34%, and spermine by 40% compared with broiler chickens of the control group. Some non-specific body resistance indices in men blood upon consumption of broiler chicken meat varied within the physiological norm. The neutrophils stimulation index increased in men blood (+0,82) after consumption of meat of broiler chickens to which spleen extract as immunomodulator and anti-stressor was introduced before slaughter (experimental group). The neutrophils stimulation index decreased in men blood (–2,21) after consumption of broiler chickens meat at pre-slaughter stress (control group). The neutrophils stimulation index in men blood of experimental and control groups differed by 34,8%, but did not go beyond the physiological norm. At the final stage of poultry feeding it is necessary to consider pre-slaughter stress and to apply biologically active substances of natural origin, such as spleen extract. The results obtained in the experiment on broiler chickens can be used in studies of non-specific resistance indices of the farm animals for increasing the organism resistance, correction and avoiding of pre-slaughter stress and improvement of product quality

The goal of this paper was to explore attitudes and habits of Serbian schoolchildren in consumption of meat. Survey was conducted using self-administrated questionnaire, on a sample of 228 schoolchildren from 7 to 18 years of age, divided into three class groups (I group - from I-IV and II group from V-VIII - Primary school; III group from I-IV - High school). The results showed that all examined schoolchildren had habit to eat meat, except one of them. In regard to the preference, meat and meat products as foodstuff were categorized among schoolchildren as 'much liked food' There was statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in explored attitude about consumption of chicken, pork, beef/veal, lamb and venison meat. Schoolchildren of all examined groups primarily consumed chicken meat, followed by pork, beef/veal, and lamb, and at the last place venison. Also, results show that most of schoolchildren usually eat meat prepared at home for one meal per a day, which is in accordance with recommendation provided by Gazette for nutrition of schoolchildren in children's institution of the Republic of Serbia. Responses to the question 'How often do you eat meat?' in 21.49% of total number indicated that eating habits in meat consumption may cause heart problems in schoolchildren population. Survey results showed that schoolchildren primarily eat meat prepared at home, in cooked dishes, as well as grilled or roasted meats. Small percentage (2.68%) pointed that they consumed meat 'three times a day', while 18.86 % do it only once a week or once a month.

The global increase in chicken meat production and consumption has heightened concerns regarding the safety of chicken meat and its derived products. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Penicillium and Aspergillus mycotoxins in 50 samples of chicken breast muscle and liver collected from the Croatian market. Eight mycotoxins commonly produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species were analyzed: aflatoxins B1 (AFB1), G1 (AFG1), B2 (AFB2), and G2 (AFG2); sterigmatocystin (STC); ochratoxin A (OTA); cyclopiazonic acid (CPA); and citrinin (CIT). Mycotoxin concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) following sample cleanup with immunoaffinity columns while a QuEChERS-based method was applied for CPA. Mycotoxin occurrence was higher in liver samples, indicating the liver as primary site of mycotoxin accumulation compared to muscle tissue, where only CPA was detected. CPA was present in 20% of all samples, with the highest concentration (6.50 µg/kg) found in breast muscle, detected for the first time in fresh meat. AFB1 and OTA were each detected in 10% of samples, and CIT was found in 4%-all exclusively in liver tissue. Notably, 4 out of the 17 contaminated samples contained more than one mycotoxin. Although the detected concentrations can be considered too low to pose an immediate health risk, the contamination rate suggests further research into these mycotoxins in chicken and other poultry species is needed.

En las últimas tres décadas el consumo de carnes en México ha cambiado debido a las variaciones en sus precios y del ingreso de la población. La presente investigación analiza la relación entre el ingreso de la población y la demanda de carnes en México de 1980 a 2016. El análisis de la demanda se realizó a partir de elasticidades calculadas mediante el modelo sistema de demanda casi ideal (AIDS). Los resultados indican que el consumo de carne de pollo y ovino responden en mayor proporción a los cambios en el ingreso de la población. La carne de pollo ha respondido mejor a los cambios del mercado, mientras que la industria de carne de bovino y porcino se enfrentan a la competencia internacional y a la industria avícola nacional. Se concluye que el desarrollo de la industria de carne en México se encuentra sujeta a un mejoramiento del poder adquisitivo de la población, en cuyo caso, la industria más beneficiada es la de pollo.

ABSTRACT: The study predicted chicken meat production in 2019-2025 period for the leading chicken-producing countries with the help of the 1961-2018 Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data since chicken meat consumption is so high worldwide. The USA ranks the first place while Brazil and China take second and third places, respectively. The analysis of the pioneer chicken meat-producing countries indicates that while the portion of the USA in world production decreases, the share, particularly Brazil and China, will approach that of the USA. World chicken meat production, which was 7.56 million tons in 1961, will increase to 139.19 million tons in 2025, and this production per capita is predicted to increase to 17.0 kg in 2025 from 2.4, 5.35, 9.80, and 15.0 kg in 1961, 1981, 2001, and 2018, respectively. Indonesia, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and India will run the highest increases in production. However, the share of countries in chicken meat production will decrease from 61% to 60% in 2019-2025 compared to the 2012-2018 periods. This condition showed that apart from some leading countries, the production will keep a rapid increase in production. The increase in chicken meat production and chicken meat import worldwide will improve human nutrition, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. Countries that run cost advantages and high-quality life standards in line with technological innovations produce processed chicken products, strengthen animal health, hygiene, and transportation standards, and attach importance to advertising activities that increase consumer demand will be more advantageous in this market.

This study was conducted in Gena Bossa district on assessment of consumption and marketing of chickens with the objectives of assessing chicken meat and egg consumption and marketing system of chickens. Random sampling method was used to select 138 households for interview. About 55.1% of chickens were owned by wife and the rest of flocks were owned by husband, boys and girls. Almost all of the farm activities were conducted by women especially cleaning poultry house, feeding and watering of chickens. About 40.6% of respondents provide half a day to care chickens. Chicken meat and egg consumption were connected with holidays. Farmers consume chicken meat 3.64 times per year and they consume egg 2.22 times per month. There were no formal market channel for live chickens and egg marketing. Market fluctuation of chickens and eggs occur during holidays. Unstable price, demand seasonality, lack of market places, poor infrastructure and lack of market information were common factors affecting live chicken and egg marketing in the study area. In summary, this result recommended that government should organize production of chickens with marketing channel. Key words: Chicken, consumption, marketing, Gena Bossa.

IntroductionContamination with heavy and toxic metals along the food value chain is a public health concern in Bangladesh.MethodsIn this study, 608 fish and chicken samples from traditional and modern retail outlets in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas were collected and analyzed for chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) contamination, using atomic absorption spectrometry method. The daily intake, target hazard quotient and the target carcinogenic risk (for lead only) as a result of fish and chicken consumption was calculated based on mean results, and by Monte Carlo simulation in @Risk with 100,000 iterations (quantitative risk assessment).ResultsCr and Cd were detected in 80–86% of both chicken meat and fish samples, while Pb positivity found in chicken meat and fish was 54.9 and 23.3%, respectively. The mean concentration (±SD) of Cr, Cd, and Pb in chicken meat were 0.66 ± 0.93, 0.02 ± 0.03, and 0.09 ± 0.10 mg/kg, respectively; and in fish were 0.49 ± 0.62, 0.02 ± 0.03, and 0.06 ± 0.09 mg/kg, respectively. The estimated daily intakes of Cr, Cd, and Pb from chicken and fish were lower than the maximum tolerable daily intake in all studied areas. In addition, the target carcinogenic risk for Pb in chicken was lower than the negligible range, which indicated the risk of cancer due to exposure to Pb through chicken meat and fish consumption was very low.DiscussionThe present study concludes that consumption of chicken meat and fish in Bangladesh, currently at very low levels, is unlikely to constitute a major health risk for humans in respect to these metals. However, continuous market surveillance for heavy metals in food stuff is recommended, especially since consumers may increase their meat intake.

The Indian poultry sector significantly boosts GDP. It is grown at 8-10% annually, reaching $22.97 billion in 2022, expected to hit $41.94 billion (10.18% CAGR) from 2023 to 2028. Social media misinformation adversely affected the broiler sector, lowering prices and consumption. Using the Tobit Model, this study analysed Indian households' broiler chicken purchases during misinformation. Data on demographics, socioeconomics, and monthly consumption of chicken meat was collected from 503 respondents and analysed. On average, men favoured broiler chicken, while women preferred native chicken. The potential impact of social media misinformation on women's choices and the influence on households with senior citizens, which consumed significantly less quantity compared to their counterparts, remained intriguing. Unexpectedly, households with better incomes and more education purchased less broiler meat. Marital status, place of residence, cohabitation, and presence of children did not significantly affect the outcome. Muslim families purchased more broiler chicken meat, and larger households consumed more. Consumption frequency was important, with daily and alternate-day customers making larger purchases. Purchases of broiler meat were negatively impacted by the consumption of country chicken. Amidst social media misinformation, while a slight adverse impact on household broiler consumption may have occurred, it's notable that a significant portion of households (97.20%) continued to purchase broiler chicken meat, exhibiting the potential effectiveness of media-driven interventions in mitigating the impact of misinformation and reiterated the persistent favourability for broiler chicken as a dietary protein choice within the larger consumer demographic. The Indian poultry industry is vital for food security and economic growth, making it imperative to address social media-induced panic. Transparency, trust, and accurate information transmission are essential. In order to effectively handle market challenges, stakeholders need to take into account factors like demography and dietary preferences that impact consumer behaviour.
