Abstract
The error attributable to the motion of irregular surfaces in on-line thickness calibration by the radiation attenuation technique is discussed. This error increases with the degree of surface irregularity and, in a number of systems, with experimental parameters such as beam width, speed and measurement time interval. While different systems can have the same error, however, the corresponding fractional errors are not necessarily the same. Conditions under which the error is minimized are discussed.
