Abstract

Dynamic compaction of SiC powder has been performed by utilizing the heat generated by the exothermic reaction of titanium and carbon to produce titanium carbide, TiC. Well-bonded SiC compacts having 99% of theoretical density and a microhardness of 28.7 GPa were produced by this technique; the microhardness of dynamically compacted SiC powder obtained without the heat of the exothermic reaction was 19.5 GPa.
