Abstract

Abstract The Dutch East Indian Empire spans two periods: the first, between c.1602 and 1795, coincides with the life span of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and covers the territories and settlements across Asia controlled by the company. The second period, between c.1815 and 1949, focuses on the Dutch East Indies, which emerged after World War II substantially as the Republic of Indonesia.
