Abstract

WE have been making photographic observations of Comet Kohoutek (1973f) at the observatory of Izana, Tenerife, with the aim of assaying the dust content of the tail. We have taken many photographs on various films and with various filters; having enlarged and printed some of the negatives we have noticed on many of them a straight dark streak running away from the head for a distance of about 21/2 arc deg. The streak is to be seen on exposures made on 1974 January 9, 10, 11 and 12 on Kodak Tri-X Pan, RAR 2495 and Eastman Kodak High Speed Infra-red (HIE-135) emulsions and with focal lengths of 85, 135 and 225 mm (Fig. 1).
