Abstract

1. 1. 96 prisoners and 37 factory patients with epigastric distress were subjected to an investigation of psychosocial factors related to the compliants and medical findings. 2. 2. The two study populations differed statistically significantly in regard to depressive affect, aggressiveness, irascibility, alcohol addiction, insomia, headache and functional heart symptoms. 3. 3. Onset of the epigastric distress in childhood was rare. 73 out of 96 prisoners only experienced their first epigastric distress period after one year of confinement in prison. 4. 4. 87 out of 96 prisoners dated the onset of their present epigastric distress period to the current imprisonment. 5. 5. The only main difference between the duodenal ulcer and functional dyspepsia patients was the absence of functional heart symptoms in the patients with an active duodenal ulcer. 6. 6. The findings seem to indicate that the duodenal ulcer personality and the duodenal ulcer conflict are different in different cultures.
