Abstract

Traditional literature reviews and specifically systematic literature reviews have been an essential method in assessing the epistemological progress of any field. However, studies about the dumpsite leachate risks focusing on a region in Africa, the East African Community (EAC), are scarce. Considering the items of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), this paper summarizes information on leachate treatment on major waste disposal sites in the EAC. Specifically, this study seeks to review how leachates are recognized as an evolving problem and what are the mid- to long-term policy targets for stakeholders to implement technical and inclusive solutions to mitigate ecotoxic hazards from dumpsite leachate in the EAC.
