Abstract

In this paper, the proposed direct torque control with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (DTC-SPWM) based realization of space vector modulation (SVM) with the reduced carrier is used to control the five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive. The DTC control method is designed based on the mathematical model of the five-phase PMSM motor and the relevant controllers are suitably constructed to achieve independent torque control. To boost the overall efficiency of the multiphase with multilevel drive, a five-phase SPWM based realization of space vector modulation with a reduced carrier is implemented instead of a look-up table. The proposed method reduces the complexity of sector selection based SVM method. The proposed DTC-SPWM based realization of SVM with reduced carrier technique for a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor drive is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform under various dynamic operating situations, such as, no-load, load, reversal speed, a step change in load, and step change in speed, etc and its effectiveness of the proposed model is confirmed by comparing with a two-level inverter.
