Abstract

This is enmphatically not the Dryden of twentieth-century criticism. If we are to understand the disparity, we need for a start to be clear what Johnson is thinking of. The earlier part of the Life has presented us with a long catalogue of misdeeds and the passage just quoted is followed by three further specimens by way of illustration, two from the plays and one from Annus Mirabilis. The first is a couplet from The Conquest of Granada which had already drawn thiC following comment from Settle:
