Abstract

The release of oxprenolol from drug-PMMA/MANa gel beads via the erosion process was investigated. A synchronized constant gel thickness was observed because the rates of swelling and erosion are equal, resulting in non-Fickian release kinetics. The release of oxprenolol HCl was influenced to a smaller extent by the pH and buffer concentration of the dissolution medium. At pH 5.9 in 1/15 M buffer, erosion did not occur due to the lower pH condition in comparison with the p K a of PMMA/MAA. As a result, the drug release was severely retarded.
