Abstract

Summary Drug availability and dose information for children were assessed by detailed scrutiny of each drug entry in the Data Sheet Compendium 1978 and the British National Formulary 1976-78, and by evaluation of data supplied by the manufacturers from which their dose recommendations were derived. The use of two-thirds of the drugs is limited by disclaimers and inadequate dose information, and for most of the other drugs, the basis on which dose recommendations are made is inappropriate. The limited availability of drugs suggests that more studies on the clinical evaluation of drugs in children are urgently required, and that paediatric clinical pharmacology should be developed as a speciality in Britain.
