Abstract

Driving organizational innovation in mature firms is a cognitively and emotionally challenging endeavor. Unclear remains what leads individuals irrespective of formal entitlement to discretionarily engage in driving organizational innovation despite the risks and challenges associated with such engagement. Conceptualizing individual proactivity in driving firm innovation as an active approach behavior towards complex managerial decision-making tasks of strategic scope, this paper introduces the construct of strategic decision-making self-efficacy (SDSE), defined as an individual’s confidence to make decisions of strategic scope. SDSE is understood as a self-regulatory mechanism to catalyze individuals’ proactive engagement in driving organizational exploitation efforts under a novelty paradigm, even if this means to deliberately forego or violate against existing routines, policies, or people.
