Abstract
Radio propagation beyond the horizon by troposcatter is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the troposphere. The design of any troposcatter communication link requires knowledge of the tropospheric parameters. Many of these parameters can be investigated by using troposcatter links. A CW link with beam-swinging capability can be used to investigate such parameters as the nature of turbulence (whether isotropic or anisotropic), height of scattering layers, cross path winds, etc. In this paper, the expected results from beam-swinging experiments on the Kanpur-Nainital link are theoretically derived. The signal strength and Doppler spectrum are calculated as a function of antenna beam offset from the great circle path for various assumed values of tropospheric parameters. The influence of the dependence of the spectrum of refractivity turbulence on the wave number is also investigated. The effect of specular reflection is considered.
