Abstract

This article presents a set of statistical data on the population of disabled persons in France. It first characterizes the persons recognized as disabled and who therefore receive in-kind benefits or cash allowances. Then, data from Handicaps, Incapacités, Dépendance (HID, handicaps, disabilities, dependency) surveys are used to characterize a broader population who have reported a disability, an activity limitation or an official recognition. The difference between the two sets of data illustrates how difficult it is to estimate the number of disabled persons living in a territory.
