ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to contribute knowledge about how children aged 10 to 12 describe their leisure time, and how their accounts of what they do, what they want to do, and what they perceive as available to them can be understood in relation to age as a social category. Drawing on qualitative interviews with children aged 10 to 12 who attend open leisure programmes, and guided by a ‘doing age’ framework, this study approaches age as a socially constructed and negotiated concept shaped through everyday practices. The analysis reveals that children position themselves as being at an ‘in‐between’ stage, neither ‘little kids’ nor teenagers, and use leisure spaces to define what is appropriate for ‘kids their age’. Two key processes underpin this construction. Firstly, the children navigate a balance between dependence and independence, not by rejecting care, but by embracing responsibility and making informed choices. Secondly, they express a desire for progression, seeking more advanced or age‐appropriate activities. Together, these processes reflect their efforts to be recognised as capable and maturing individuals. Children also describe leisure spaces as age‐coded, distinguishing between environments perceived as ‘for kids’ and those offering more autonomy or challenge. Their connections to these spaces are shaped by how well they align with their self‐perceived age. Their experiences highlight a form of interdependence, where autonomy, trust, and care are continuously negotiated in both material and relational contexts.

HOW DOES STAFF WORKING AT UNIVERSITY THINK ABOUT AND EXPERIENCE LEISURE? (A QUALITATIVE STUDY)
  • Sep 1, 2014
  • Ghanbari Sahar + 2 more

Background: University staff plays an important role in breeding a healthy and prosperous generation. Their right for attending to interests and selfactualization are noticeable. This qualitative research has been conducted in order to understand and explain the perspective and experience of staff working at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (AJUMS) about Leisure time. Methods: A qualitative study using purposeful sampling was performed among staff working in all parts of AJUMS about leisure time in 2012. The tool used for gathering data was a deep, semi-structured interview. Data saturation was achieved with 18 interviews. Findings from the interviews were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: In this study, there were 5 themes for perspective and experience of staff, including meaningfulness and purposefulness of leisure time (physical, mental and social), leisure time activities (passing individual and in group), leisure time duration (more or less, and the same as the time of working), barriers for leisure time (personal, social, and environmental), and suggestions for how to spend leisure time (role of the person and community). The findings from participants’ views and experiences showed that they are not satisfied with their leisure pattern. With attention to working at university, they do not have efficient leisure time duration. Conclusion: Participants believed that leisure time is effective to improve their physical, psychological, and social performance. People spend their leisure time either individually or in groups. Personal, social, and environmental barriers highlight the role of an individual and society as a whole in increasing opportunities for better leisure.

This study examines the influences of satisfaction of leisure time and space (i.e., public and private leisure spaces) on overall leisure life satisfaction, after controlling for respondents’demographic, socio-economic, and geographical characteristics. Based on the data from 2019 National Leisure Activity Survey, this study performed a series of analysis, including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the analyses indicate that leisure time was more significantly related to respondents’ overall leisure life satisfaction than leisure spaces. Particularly, leisure time satisfaction during weekday largely influenced on the overall leisure life satisfaction compared to leisure time satisfaction during weekend. Regarding public and private leisure spaces, the influences of the two different spaces were inconsistent. While public space was significantly related to the leisure life satisfaction, the influence of the private space was greater than the public space, when applying the mean value of the summed scored of three question items of the private spaces into a regression analysis. The result reveals that leisure life satisfaction is likely to be enhanced by those collaborative efforts from both public and private leisure spaces, although leisure time was the most important consideration for leisure life satisfaction.

The dynamics and demands of contemporary society require increasingly tight adjustments concerning time, space, and human relationships. Maintaining a healthy balance among work, education, and leisure is necessary and challenging. In this scenario, distance education and information and communication technologies offer university-level training opportunities for those working in various contexts. In addition to time management challenges, finding leisure spaces that promote well-being presents another challenge. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the implications of simultaneously working and studying in leisure spaces and times, particularly focusing on students pursuing education through a distance-learning modality at the Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios-UNIMINUTO at a national level in Colombia. Methodologically, the study adopted a mixed research approach, utilizing a sequential explanatory design. Data were collected through questionnaires and the focus group technique. The analysis was based on categories such as serious leisure, casual leisure, digital leisure, and satisfaction with leisure. The quantitative component constituted a sample size of 455 students. The results revealed the characteristics of the leisure spaces within this population and the level of satisfaction with the limited leisure times and spaces available, given the peculiarity of working and studying concurrently. This satisfaction, whether derived from serious, casual, or digital leisure activities, correlated with the achieved well-being on personal and familial dimensions. Developing a Cultural Theory of Music Making and Leisure
  • Jan 10, 2017
  • Karl Spracklen

People listen to music in their leisure time, in leisure spaces, as a supposedly free act of agency. Yet social and cultural theorists show that leisure choices and spaces are constrained by hegemonic power, and that cultural forms such as music are products of commodification. This chapter explores these key claims for the use of music and the consumption of music in leisure spaces. It uses the work of Baudrillard on simulacra to explore the potential meaning and purpose of music in the lives of makers, listeners and fans—as a key device in constructing alternative hyperrealities to the capitalized reality of late modernity.

Gendered Differences in Young Tourists' Leisure Spaces and Times

  • Neil Carr

The use of leisure spaces and leisure times by young men and women tourists is studied. It is based on information collected about the behaviour of young tourists during their holiday in the beach-oriented resort of Torquay, in southwest England. This work is required because of the importance of the young beach-oriented tourist to the tourism industry and the paucity of previous research on this subject. The need to study gendered differences is related to the suggestion that such differences exist in the leisure behaviour of people in their home environment. The study found relatively few gendered differences, in terms of use of leisure spaces and times, group composition, or perception of atmosphere in the holiday environment.

  • Monica Z Li + 1 more

Using a series of life-story interviews with a female migrant live-in caregiver in Beijing, this study examined the history and evolution of the migrant worker’s migration and the impacts it had on her leisure experience, identities, values, and social positions. The findings revealed that migration imposed unique constraints on her leisure, such as those related to the overlap of work and leisure time and space, limited finances, preference for money accumulation over spending on leisure, illiteracy, alienation from the host population, and a breakdown of family ties. Migration to the city, however, also led to her economic and gender empowerment, presented new leisure opportunities, and contributed to the development of new leisure attitudes.

Sustainable Village Project: the importance of leisure and public space for collective organization

This article discusses how the Sustainable Village Project (SVP), developed in a peripheral region of Curitiba-Paraná-Brazil, enables residents to take ownership of different leisure spaces autonomously. The study’s concern was to situate how SVP was set and its actions in the neighbourhood, to understand how leisure spaces influence or provide mobilisations, and to support the interventions of this project. As social ethnographic research (that used the techniques of participant observation, field diaries, and open and structured interviews as research instruments), we sought to know the different interlocutors and describe and interpret various phenomena to share meanings with others. The SVP was created by the Municipal Environment Secretariat of Curitiba and aimed to collectively establish sustainability practices as a process that allowed people to decide on their own choices, combining individual and collective well-being with the conservation of the physical environment. The proposal developed mainly in this community’s leisure time allows us to conclude that the experiences lived in the context of leisure can be decisive for human emancipation. Such experiences can promote, through dialogue, critical reflection and collective construction, the observation and resistance to injustice, giving us conditions to modify the reality in which we are inserted.

Young Disabled People, Leisure and Everyday Life: Reviewing Conventional Definitions for Leisure Studies
  • Jan 1, 2000
  • Annals of Leisure Research
  • Cara Aitchison

Conventional definitions of leisure have focussed on when young people participate in leisure (leisure time), what they do in their leisure (leisure activities) and where this leisure is provided (leisure spaces). For young disabled people, however, questions of who appear to be just as significant as questions of when, what and where. This paper discusses the importance of social interaction with significant others as a prerequisite for defining certain activities and spaces as ‘leisure’. The paper examines a combination of leisure activities and spaces in the lives of young disabled people and assesses the importance of friendships and social interaction in defining these activities and spaces as leisure.

Can Residents Access Leisure Spaces in Our City: Investigating the Leisure Space Distribution in Seoul, South Korea
  • Jan 18, 2024
  • Leisure Sciences
  • Hyun-Young Jin + 3 more

The preferred spaces for leisure activities across all age groups in Seoul, South Korea, and the age inclusiveness of leisure spaces during the COVID-19 were investigated. The accessibility and distribution preferences for leisure facilities of different generations are investigated as aspects of leisure space age inclusiveness. One-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, boxplot analysis, and GIS mapping were applied. The cost, time, and importance of leisure significantly differ by generation. Additionally, leisure space preferences differ by age group. A discrepancy in the distribution of age-inclusive leisure spaces by generation and district is revealed. The land value of a district relates to the distribution of age-inclusive leisure space. Planners and policymakers can use these findings to promote socially age-inclusive communities that support ‘aging in place’ and leisure spaces for all generations, thereby promoting the health of all residents. However, it is essential to note that this study has limitations arising from the COVID-19.

This is the study on users’ perception gap about the effects of leisure space development of the Han River Citizen Park according to leisure constraints and was to identify leisure constraints expressed when using Han River Citizen Park and identify perception on positive and negative impacts according to use behavior characteristics of Han River Citizen Park and leisure space development. In order to compare and analyze the perception gap about the leisure space development of Han River Citizen Park users according to leisure constraints, we classified information and resources, economic affordability, free time on leisure activities in Han River Citizen Park into high influence group and low influence group and did an in-depth analysis. The results are as follows. First, Han River Citizen Park has the nature of neighborhood use with little influence on leisure constraints such as jogging and marathon, biking etc. including walking and relaxation and was a place to visit for simple exercises. Second, in the effects according to leisure space development of Han River Citizen Park, affordable leisure activity costs and ease of access were evaluated the most highly and congestion due to increasing users, increase in administrative operating budget and management personnel were concerned the most. Third, the leisure constraints in Han River Citizen Park were affected in the order of free time, economic affordability, information and resources. There were also perception gaps in congestion due to an increase in administrative operating budget and management personnel, increase in users including improvement of various leisure opportunities and leisure levels, encouragement of pride and attachment for Han river, affordable leisure activity costs depending on the degree of the influence of leisure constraints. Therefore, this study can be said to have the meaning in that we could identify leisure constraints affecting Han River Citizen Park users and resulting perception in leisure space development and revealed that the degree of the influence of leisure constraints varies in the use behavior of leisure space development of Han River Citizen Park and perception of positive and negative development impact. In addition, in order to resolve leisure complaints according to leisure constraints, we studied the need of accompaniment of leisure space operation and management system, development of various customized programs, introduction of recreational space and facilities prioritizing public interest rather than private interest with public 여가제약에 따른 한강시민공원 여가공간개발에 대한 인식연구 Journal of the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture 165 한국조경학회지 제 42권 5호(2014년 10월) 53 relations and information delivery about leisure space of Han River Citizen Park.

Ocio, Prevención del Bullying y Ciberbullying en Adolescentes: una Revisión Sistemática
  • Apr 1, 2025
  • Electronic Journal of Research in Education Psychology
  • Jorge Díaz-Esterri + 3 more

Introduction. Bullying and cyberbullying undermine the identity of the young people who suffer them. This multidimensional phenomenon takes place within the peer group, in different interaction settings, outside the classroom contexts. It also presents various risk factors related to leisure spaces and activities, which in many cases have a high potential for prevention during adolescence. Method. This article presents a systematic review exploring the risk and protective factors associated with leisure spaces and activities that occupy adolescents' leisure time in relation to bullying and cyberbullying. To this end, a qualitative methodology was used, which involved the systematic identification, analysis and synthesis of relevant content from scientific publications based on the PRISMA guidelines. Results. A structured search for peer-reviewed studies was conducted in the following databases: Dialnet, Scopus, Web of Science and EbscoHOST. From an initial exploitation of 513 results, 14 manuscripts were finally selected. The main findings point to a strong relationship between digital leisure, cyberbullying and cyber-victimisation. The relationship between bullying and other leisure activities considered harmful, such as alcohol consumption or excessive use of television and other media, is also highlighted. In addition, bullied children and adolescents were up to four times more likely than their non-bullied peers to have mental health problems that negatively affected their daily lives, relationships with friends, learning at school or leisure activities. On the other hand, spending leisure time with parents reduced the likelihood of victimisation, and activities such as reading or being physically active minimised the likelihood of being a bully or a victim. Discussion or Conclusion. The results suggest that there is a large body of research on the subject, the transferability of which can contribute to the substantiation of socio-educational interventions through leisure activities for the prevention of bullying and cyberbullying in adolescents.

Minority youth, everyday racism and public spaces in contemporary Russia
  • Apr 18, 2011
  • European Journal of Cultural Studies
  • Ulrike Ziemer

This article examines the impact of global change and post-Soviet political transformation on diasporic youth cultural practices and experience in Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia. While young Armenians’ leisure spaces are characterized by inclusive notions of ethnic plurality and tolerance, sometimes individuals are racialized or ethnicized when they pass through public spaces. Young Armenians’ leisure spaces are ethnically structured, but not ethnically exclusive. This article challenges the view that young people from ethnic minorities are passive recipients of everyday racism. Instead, it is suggested that young Armenians have routinized their responses to racism and xenophobia in their everyday practices, and so are able to undermine the dominant political discourse.

Leisure time: gender and regional inequalities in Croatia
  • Feb 8, 2021
  • World Leisure Journal
  • Lynette Šikić-Mićanović + 2 more

Previous research suggested that women and men experience their leisure time differently (i.e. time not committed to the labour force, domestic caregiving, or personal care). In relation to quantitative differences, studies worldwide have confirmed that a gender gap in leisure time use exists even though both women’s and men’s lives may be enriched through opportunity for leisure. In this article, we examine the organisation of time in the domains of leisure and its gender dimensions in Croatia. To determine whether demographic characteristics (e.g. education, age, employment) and household organisation (e.g. presence of children, time spent doing housework, number of household activities) account for considerable variation in leisure time, we focus on married and cohabiting individuals. Apart from gender differences, we will also investigate whether there are regional differences in leisure time use. An explanation of forces that result in gendered and regional differences of leisure time use in Croatia is discussed.
