Abstract

Purpose: Previous research has demonstrated that family meals are protective against numerous health risk behaviors in adolescence. Television viewing during meals has been shown to temper that protective association somewhat for dietary intake, but we are not aware of any research regarding the role of TV viewing during family meals for substance use behaviors. The purpose of this study is to examine substance use behaviors among adolescents who report having family meals with TV, family meals without TV, or no regular family meals.
