Abstract
National service frameworks, the Commission for Health Improvement and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence all form part of the government initiative to embed evidence-based practice into health-care delivery. Nurses perform a crucial role in the delivery of evidence-based practice, not only because they have significant contact with patients but also because they are important care managers, often coordinating packages of care involving other practitioners and agencies. Nurse education moved into higher education to ensure the centrality of education within the professional socialization process and to provide a foundation in research utilization in practice. The move was supposed to steer the practice of nursing away from routine and ritual learned through an apprenticeship training to decision-making based on knowledge informed by research.
