Abstract

The Quest of the Historical Jesus has never only been about the quest for Jesus. How the at work within the various quests are to be understood is the focus of this chapter. The chapter is divided into eight sections. It begins by distilling from the Quest's history seven interweaving agendas that have been at work. The most prominent agenda at work in the Quest's history has been a theological agenda, usually in a specifically Christian form. The other agendas discussed in this chapter are: anti-ecclesiastical, ethical, political, cultural-religious, psychological, and philosophical. Finally, the author offers a brief summary of the findings. Though all seven agendas can be deemed valid, and though positivism in its strongest form really is dead (or should be quietly put to sleep if it is not), there remains the question of how the conflict of multiple interpretations is to be handled. Keywords:Christian orthodoxy; diverse agendas; historical Jesus; Jesus Quest; positivism; theological agenda
