Abstract

Abstract : In five unanaesthetized trained dogs the effect of injection of small quantities of water into a carotid loop on the excretion of urine was investigated. The infusion rates were 3.0, 2.5 and 2.0 ml/min. Infusion time was 30 min, so that a total of 90, 75 and 60 ml of water was injected. As controls, identical water infusions were made into a peripheral vein. The following results were obtained: Diuresis occurred only with intracarotid infusions. This speaks in favour of a central location of osmoreceptors. The diuresis was a function of the amount of water infused and was due solely to an increase in free water clearance. The excretion of electrolytes and the osmotic clearance remained unchanged. These findings can best be explained by the ADH mechanism. (Author)
