Abstract

Summary A new freshwater genus, Distrionella , from the Bacillariophyta is described. A population of ribbed araphid diatoms, originally thought to be an Asterionella sp., was found to possess transapical ribs of the type observed in Diatoma and Meridion in a large percentage of the population. Further investigation, using light and electron microscopy, revealed a set of novel characters which prevents its placement in any araphid genus so far described. A second species, recently described as a Fragilaria , appears to belong to Distrionella and is accordingly transferred.
