Abstract

Abstract The distribution of molybdenum between matte and slag was investigated at 1300°C under conditions of silica saturation. Distribution coefficients were determined as functions of matte grade in the system slag/matte/copper under inert argon atmosphere, and under controlled atmospheres at P O2 = 5 × 10−11 atm and at P SO2 = 0.1 and 0.01 atm. The ratio mass % Mo in slag to mass % Mo in matte increased with increasing -matte grade. The results were interpreted in terms of equilibria involving a molybdenum oxide in the slag phase and a molybdenum sulphide in the matte phase controlled by the activity of iron sulphide in the matte, subject to the various constraints applied to the system. The extraction of molybdenum from a slag into an iron sulphide matte was studied with a view to molybdenum recovery from slag.
