Abstract

The power exchange between the two principal polarizations of a linear wave occurs only within a region of interaction with a counterpropagating nonlinear-optical pulse as a result of induced polarization coupling between the two waves in a single-mode fiber. An analytical solution of the power exchange is obtained. Such an effect can be utilized to measure the distribution of the linear birefringence of fibers. Potential applications in distributed pressure sensing are discussed.
