Abstract

This study investigates the scoring distribution of foot and leg linear type traits, rear legs (side and rear view), and foot angle of Holstein and Jersey dairy bulls provided by semen companies in Brazil. Registers of 392 Holstein and 92 Jersey bulls were found in the websites of these companies, and their proofs were located in the summary Dairy Bulls, in the American April 2008 database. Descriptive statistics for all traits and the test of normality were carried out. Mean scores for foot and leg traits as well as rear legs - rear view measurements were biologically favorable, unlike those of rear legs - side view and foot angles. Therefore, caution is needed when selecting bulls for reproduction as regards these characteristics. The animals available during the research period fit the standard recommendations for foot and leg scores and rear legs - rear view, which would contribute to longevity of daughters of progeny-tested bulls. This indicates that the monitoring of bull proofs is important in order to avoid the use of sperm with genetic defects.
