Abstract

About two decades ago the Belgian Nuclear Research Center, SCK• CEN, started the construction of an underground laboratory at a depth of 250 m in the Boom Clay formation extending from 180 to 280 m depth. The shaft was dug under freezing conditions because large aquifers surmount the clay layer. The underground galleries were constructed with conventional semi-automatic tunneling machines.
