Abstract

Dr. Weiss suggests that the after-effect observed with deoxyribonucleic acid in the presence of oxygen is due to the slow hydrolysis of phosphate from sugar which has been previously hydroxylated. We agree that the liberation of inorganic phosphate occurs as a consequence of the oxidation of sugar. We have made experiments on the action of hydroxyl radicals produced photochemically on mono-, di- and tri-ethyl phosphates.
