Abstract

Lu was an important feudal state of the Western Zhou and the Spring and Autumn periods.1 The state's capital at Qufu is located within the present district of Qufu in Shandong Province. Traces of the ancient city's walls and buildings—including the palace, handicraft workshops, residences, and even graves—have been found close by one another at that site. Together the remains provide a fairly well-preserved example of one feudal state's capital city from the pre-Qin period. Evaluation of the periodization and the basic groundplan of the ancient city is a important archeological task. This article offers an opinion on these matters based on recently obtained archeological materials supplemented by reference to textual sources.
