Abstract

Summary This discussion of the fundamental factors involved in the underwriting of earthquake insurance is presented as a focus for constructive criticism and further discussion. The underwriting of earthquake insurance at the present time calls for the best judgment that can be exercised in order to be fair to the insurance company as well as to the property-owner. Long strides are now being made in gathering data upon the magnitude and type of earthquake motions, and more comprehensive analyses are being made upon the effect of earthquakes upon various types of structures, so that in the future we may anticipate having much more information upon which to promulgate proper rates to be charged for earthquake insurance.
