Abstract
Finite element methods using discontinuous, piecewise linear or quadratic, approximating functions, are developed for transient heat flow analysis. The methods are shown to have definite advantages over the ordinary continuous finite element methods, particularly as regards the prediction of the spatial temperature moments which are needed for the ordinary finite element methods of thermal stress analysis.
