Abstract

In order to safely pass on hereditary information from parent to offspring, DNA must be packaged differently in sperm cells than in somatic cells. In somatic cells, genetic material is packaged into nucleosomes, each consisting of a histone octamer wrapped by DNA. However, in sperm cells, DNA must be eventually repackaged using the sperm nuclear protein protamine through a histone replacement pathway to create a hydrodynamic sperm head. Our goal is to characterize this pathway, both the folding mechanism and structural states.
