Abstract

The anisotropic interaction between the crystal lattice and the flux-line lattice results in a misalignment between the applied magnetic field and the fluxoids in a type-II superconductor. Small-angle neutron diffraction has been used to provide the first direct observations of this phenomenon. It is shown that the misalignment angle in the intermediate mixed state is related to the relative anisotropy in the lower critical field ${H}_{c1}$, and this relationship is tested for a spherical sample of pure niobium.
