Abstract

Measurements of AC plasma currents may provide valuable information about space plasma oscillations in the ULF/ELF frequency range. Such measurements were performed onboard Prognoz-8 and Prognoz-10 spacecraft with the use of a Faraday cup and a split Langmuir probe. Combining simultaneously measured plasma current, electric and magnetic field data one can identify the wave mode and calculate the wavevector. Direct measurements of currents in space plasmas are significantly affected by the sensor-plasma interaction. We model these effects for several wave modes in the frame of a linear warm plasma approximation. We present two examples of the plasma current measurements conducted in the range 0.1-30 Hz, which prove the validity of proposed method.
