Abstract

Abstract This paper analysis an element of our Arab World and its surrounding traditional architecture, developed over many generations to provide a comfortable microclimate using natural energy: wind-catcher and wind-tower. Cool towers which are a modern version of the traditional wind-catcher are used to cool the air inside buildings depending on the natural air movement – aerodynamic – the difference in pressure between the internal and external air. They trap the wind from high above the building where it is cooler and stronger. It channels it down into the building interior spaces. The wind it captures above the building contains less solid material than the wind at the lower heights and much of the sands which enters is dumped at the bottom of the shaft. It was originally used to reach human comfort within building. Scientist and ecologist are calling upon rationality in using natural sources and are looking for solutions that can achieve both human comfort and preserve our natural source, solutions that can be green and efficient. While applying modern elements, materials or systems to the Mulqaf, Malqaf may rises its efficiency and make it more applicable for our microclimate and our modern life style. This paper made a comparison between wind-catcher and solar air heating system, and comes out with a proposed design combining the two systems, so we can benefit from natural resources through all the year. There is still much to be acquired than scientific understanding and aesthetic appreciation of traditional architecture.
