Abstract

We calculate distorted wave (DW) inelastic cross sections in order to interpret experimental electron energy loss spectra (EELS) in La and Th metal. The exchange-driven (mainly spin-flip) core excitation intensities relative to the direct singlet (non-spin-flip) dipole excitations are well explained. We conclude that solid state effects have an important influence on the energy dependence of measured intensities. In contrast to the high-energy limit, we find large differences in the threshold behaviour of La compared with Th.
