Abstract
The diocotron instability is studied in a plasma confined in between two concentric cylinders by an azimuthal magnetic field. In this geometry the perturbations are compressible while equilibrium is incompressible. The Rayleigh criterion for compressible perturbations is shown to be modified. Marginal stability curves (Im ω=0) for different mode numbers are plotted. The quasilinear evolution of this instability is associated with a mean inward motion of the plasma column (inward pinch) apart from the usual diffusion to the marginal stability.
