Abstract

4-Nitrophenylacetic acid, when dissolved in aqueous methanolic alkali, undergoes a redox-type dimerization leading to the formation of 4,4′-dioxaloazobenzene and the corresponding azoxy-compound. Structures are proven by interconversion and synthesis. The relative amounts of products are closely dependent upon solvent composition.
