Abstract

In this paper, a simple and low-cost phase demodulation scheme for phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR) sensing system is proposed and investigated. By utilizing simulated coherence between different back-scattering beat signals, digital phase demodulation for vibration detection can be achieved without employing hardware phase demodulation components. Experiments were conducted and the results demonstrated that the vibration induced phase change within different lengths of sensing optical fiber can be obtained sensitively by the proposed digital processing demodulation scheme that effectively avoid the noise caused by the hardware and reduce the complexity of the distributed optical fiber sensing system.
